The short answer

Match the wallpaper to the monitor's native resolution, or go larger. For a 1080p monitor that means at least 1920 × 1080, for 1440p at least 2560 × 1440, and for 4K at least 3840 × 2160. A larger image is scaled down and stays sharp; a smaller one is scaled up and softens. The sections below cover the details that change this rule in real setups.

1080p monitors (1920 × 1080)

A Full HD wallpaper is a perfect match. A larger image works too and gives you cropping headroom, but you will not see more detail than the screen can show. If you use a 1080p screen mostly for work, a calm, low-detail image is easier to read icons against than a busy 4K photograph, whatever its resolution.

1440p monitors (2560 × 1440)

QHD is a common middle ground for gaming and productivity. Full HD wallpapers are upscaled by about 33%, which is noticeable on detailed images, so look for 2560 × 1440 or above. A 3840 × 2160 image is an easy fit because it scales down by a clean factor of 1.5, and it keeps the same 16:9 shape.

4K monitors and TVs (3840 × 2160)

On a 4K display, only a 3840 × 2160 or larger image uses every pixel. Smaller wallpapers are enlarged, and the result depends on how much fine detail the image has. If you are using scaling in the operating system (for example 150%), the wallpaper is still drawn at the full 3840 × 2160, so the same advice applies. Televisions are viewed from farther away, so small softness is less visible there than on a desk monitor.

Ultrawide and super ultrawide

MonitorResolutionRatio
Ultrawide Full HD2560 × 1080about 21:9 (64:27)
Ultrawide QHD3440 × 1440about 21:9 (43:18)
Ultrawide QHD+3840 × 1600about 21:9 (12:5)
Super ultrawide5120 × 144032:9
Large ultrawide 5K2K5120 × 2160about 21:9 (64:27)

A standard 16:9 wallpaper on an ultrawide screen has to be cropped heavily, or shown with empty bars. A 3840 × 2160 image fills the width of a 3440 × 1440 monitor, but about a quarter of its height is cut away. Look for wallpapers made in a wide format where you can, and use the aspect ratio guide to plan the crop when you cannot.

Laptops

Many laptops use 16:10 panels at 1920 × 1200 or 2560 × 1600, and some use 3:2 screens. These are slightly taller than a standard 16:9 monitor, so a 16:9 wallpaper loses a little from its left and right sides when it is filled to the screen. Resolution still follows the same rule: match or exceed the panel's native pixels, which are listed in the display settings.

Dual monitors

With two monitors of the same size, you can use one wallpaper on each, or stretch a wide image across both. For a spanned wallpaper, add up the widths: two 3840 × 2160 monitors side by side make a 7680 × 2160 desktop. If your monitors differ in resolution, set each one separately, choosing an image that matches the larger screen's pixels so neither is upscaled.

If you are unsure

Choose the same size or larger, in the same shape as your screen where possible. If you cannot find an exact match, download the original and use the Crop & Scale tool on the wallpaper page to export a version at your resolution.
