How to Set a 4K Wallpaper on macOS
Set a downloaded wallpaper on a Mac, understand Retina resolutions, and handle external displays.
Set the wallpaper
The steps differ a little between macOS versions. On macOS Ventura (13) and later:
- Download the original image and note where it was saved.
- Open the Apple menu → System Settings → Wallpaper.
- Choose Add Photo (or Add Folder or Album, depending on your version) and select the file.
- Pick the image in the list and choose how it fits the screen using the menu beside its thumbnail.
On earlier macOS versions the same options live in System Preferences → Desktop & Screen Saver. A quicker route on any version: in Finder, right-click the image and choose Set Desktop Picture.
Picking a fit
- Fill Screen scales the image to cover the display and crops the overflow. This is the best choice for most wallpapers.
- Fit to Screen shows the whole image and fills the leftover space with a background colour.
- Stretch to Fill Screen distorts the image to match the screen.
- Center shows the image at its original size, which looks small if the image has fewer pixels than the display.
- Tile repeats the image at its original size.
Retina displays and real resolution
Mac displays are described in two ways: the scaled "looks like" resolution that macOS uses for layout, and the physical pixel grid. Wallpapers are drawn on the physical grid, so that is the number to match. For example, the 14-inch MacBook Pro has a 3024 × 1964 panel and the 16-inch model has a 3456 × 2234 panel, and external 5K displays are 5120 × 2880. Your Mac's exact panel size is listed in System Settings → Displays and in About This Mac.
A 3840 × 2160 wallpaper has more pixels than a 14-inch MacBook Pro's panel, so it will be scaled down and look sharp. Because the Mac panel is slightly taller in proportion than a 16:9 image, Fill Screen trims a little from the left and right edges. The aspect ratio guide explains how much to expect.
External monitors and multiple displays
Each connected display can have its own wallpaper. In System Settings → Wallpaper, select the display you want to change and set its picture. A 4K external monitor needs a 3840 × 2160 image to use every pixel, and a 1440p one needs 2560 × 1440. For guidance on matching wallpapers to screens, see the resolution reference.
Rotating through a folder
Add a folder instead of a single image and macOS can change the wallpaper automatically at an interval you choose, such as every day or hour. Put only wallpapers that suit your display in that folder, since the same fit setting applies to all of them.
File types
JPEG and PNG work reliably everywhere. If your Mac refuses a file in another format, open it in Preview and use File → Export to save a JPEG or PNG copy. Keep the quality high when exporting, because a second round of compression can show as banding in gradients and dark areas.
