How to Set a 4K Wallpaper on Windows 11
Set a downloaded wallpaper on Windows 11, pick the right fit, and keep it looking sharp on a 4K display.
Before you start
Download the original wallpaper file from its page and note where it was saved, usually your Downloads folder. If you have a 4K display, you can confirm it under Settings → System → Display; the recommended resolution should read 3840 × 2160. Menu names can differ slightly between Windows 11 versions, but the steps below follow the current Settings app.
Method 1: Settings
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and choose Personalize, or open Settings → Personalization.
- Select Background.
- Next to "Personalize your background", choose Picture.
- Under "Choose a photo", click Browse photos and select the file you downloaded.
- Next to "Choose a fit for your desktop image", pick an option (see below). Fill is the usual choice.
Method 2: right-click the file
Open File Explorer, right-click the image and choose Set as desktop background. On some Windows 11 builds this option sits under "Show more options". The picture is applied immediately, using the fit you most recently chose in Settings.
Choosing a fit
- Fill scales the image until it covers the whole screen and crops whatever overflows. No distortion, no bars. Best for most wallpapers.
- Fit shows the whole image without cropping, adding bars where the shapes differ.
- Stretch forces the image to the screen's size and distorts it when the proportions differ. Best avoided.
- Tile repeats the image at its original size. Intended for small patterns.
- Center places the image at its original size in the middle of the screen. On a 4K screen a smaller image will appear as a small picture in a sea of background colour.
- Span stretches one image across every monitor. Use it only with a wide image made for the combined desktop size.
If the crop from Fill cuts off something important, see the aspect ratio guide, or use the Crop & Scale tool on the wallpaper page to choose the framing yourself before setting it.
Different wallpaper on each monitor
Windows lets you give each monitor its own picture. In Settings → Personalization → Background, right-click one of the pictures in the Recent images row and choose the monitor it should apply to. Match each image to its screen's resolution, as described in the resolution guide for monitors.
If the wallpaper looks soft or banded
- Check the fit. Stretch and Center both produce poor results with a mismatched image.
- Check the image size. A wallpaper smaller than 3840 × 2160 is enlarged on a 4K screen. The wallpaper page lists the exact dimensions of the original.
- Check scaling. Display scaling at 125% or 150% affects text and icons only. It does not change which wallpaper resolution you need.
- Try a PNG. Windows can re-encode JPEG wallpapers at a reduced quality, which may show as extra banding in smooth gradients and dark areas. A PNG avoids that. Some advanced users raise the quality by adding a
JPEGImportQualityvalue underHKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop; if you edit the registry, back it up first, and treat this as optional.
Slideshow
In the same Background settings, choose Slideshow instead of Picture to rotate through a folder of images, with an interval and shuffle option. Keep the folder to wallpapers that suit your screen's resolution, because Windows applies the same fit to all of them.
